Our journey began with our son, James, who is autistic and has faced communication difficulties. At 13, James has made tremendous strides in communication, transitioning from being non-verbal until age nine to now using words and Makaton to express himself.

While he continues to grapple with language, James' determination and spirit inspire us daily. Due to a lack of resources, we've home-educated him for the past year, further cementing our understanding of the unique challenges and rewards of caring for a child with special needs. In September 2023, James embarked on his next big adventure, starting secondary school a year later than most children his age.

A significant challenge we faced in our journey was James' tendency to bite his finger when he was either overly excited or distressed. To help him manage these overwhelming emotions, we turned to sensory chews. However, we found that these crucial tools would often get lost or damaged, were expensive and had long shipping times from the USA.
